Build a Duck🦆

Learn More About Your Team’s Nuanced Perspectives and Insights

Welcome to the LEGO duck instructions page at IN8 Create

This little bag of LEGO pieces is a fun team building exercise and a demonstration of the some of the basic benefits of LEGO Serious Play.

Instructions:

  1. Build a duck! Use the 6 pieces in the bag. THERE IS NO RIGHT ANSWER!

  2. Admire your duck. Look at what you built and ask yourself why you built it the way you did

  3. Take a photo!

  4. Dismantle your duck

  5. Bring the pieces to someone else on your team (or a leader or peer)

  6. Have them build a duck - Remember to tell them THERE IS NO RIGHT ANSWER!

  7. Ask them to share their duck with you - Have them hold it up and share why they built it they way they did!

  8. Show them the photo of your duck and share why you built it the way you did - Notice any similarities and differences

  9. Take a photo of their duck

  10. Repeat with as many people as you’d like

What’s happening?

We all have nuanced perspectives of the world. How we understand, view, and share information is vastly different. That nuance is represented in the duck build.

There are over 6000 possible combinations of duck! We once did this in a room of 50 people and only saw one duplicate.

So What?

Imagine if you could ask your team anything and they could build it out of LEGO bricks? (With more than the 6 pieces…)

  • What is the best thing about your product and how are customers using it?

  • What would “world class” communication look like?

  • What would “success” look like at the end of the year, this project, this product?

👉 Play and externalization makes it easier to talk about anything

👉 Building and sharing stories emphasizes succinct communication, active listening, and equal share of voice

👉 Unlocks creativity, simplifies complex topics, and shows interrelatedness

Advanced Duck Build - LEVEL 2 âť—

Ask people to build one more duck, a duck that tells a story. Specifically - “Build a duck that shows one thing you would work on if you were CEO for a day.” Remember- THERE IS NO RIGHT ANSWER. They can use the pieces in any way they want.

Sit back and enjoy people sharing more about themselves in an easy and relaxed manner.
